What's in a tin of baked beans ?
Well, a 205g tin of Heinz '57 Varieties' Baked Beans ( with tomato sauce ) lists the ingredients as ...
* Beans
* Water
* Tomatoes
* Sugar
* Salt
* Modified Cornflour
* Spirit Vinegar
* Spices

Well that's the new and unusual hobby you weren't expecting; how many beans are there ?
In the 205g tin that I examined there were 217; but this was a sample of one, so ...
* Is there a consistent number of beans in a similarly sized tin; the size of each individual bean does vary ( and some that have split in two have to be married up again ) but is there a consistent number ?
* Does the number of beans for a particular size of can scale up ( or down ) from this baseline ?

Aren't pylons fun !
And I don't just mean pylons; there are telegraph poles ( both for carrying telephone cables and for distributing electricity ) and even street lights.
You've probably never had any interest in any of these before but, let me tell you, it's a fascinating subject.
You probably think that all pylons are the same. All telegraph poles are the same. All street lights are the same. But you are, oh so, so, wrong.
If you look closely you will also find that almost every pylon, telegraph pole, street light and even road sign has a distinctive label on it to identify it to the utility company or the local authority. So, instead of writing down aeroplane or train wagon numbers you can make a list of all the pylons, telegraph poles, street lights and road signs you have encountered. |
